Based on pure aesthetics, the newest Magic Mouse from Apple is the peak of achievement for the company’s design team. It is sophisticated, charming, and wonderful. The Magic Mouse represents the style of Apple.
Seen from the view point of design, the Magic Mouse does look charming. The top surface has a glassy smooth surface and it is made of glass. While its sides are made of textured aluminum made to maximize the grip. Just like the Apple Mouse (the new name for the Mighty Mouse), the Magic Mouse has no visible buttons and no scroll button. Its appearance is so low-profile, low-lying. Perhaps the mouse is the lowest-lying ever seen in the world. Its dimension size is 4.5 x 2.13 x 0.93 inch. If you’re the type who uses the mouse by placing the palm of your hand on the mouse, this Mouse Magic is probably too low for you. At the bottom of the mouse there is the battery compartment, using two AA-size batteries. A laser sensor is above the middle position. The on / off button is located adjacent to the laser sensor. To ensure a smooth motion, The Apple is using two plastic rails (such a mouse-feet) extend from front to back. It’s quite unique.
Multi-touch technology for the iPhone and MacBook track-pad is applied to this Magic Mouse. The use of this technology to the Magic Mouse is applied to become a scroll. You can use the entire upper surface (above the logo for Apple) from this mouse to scroll. Up, down, left, right, diagonal, rotate, and even you can move the window that opens with him. It seems very easy and natural. This is caused by the surface of this mouse that is made of glass. Another feature is two fingers to scroll left or right that will help us when using iPhoto application to view the image or Safari to view the page before or the next.
It can also be used to zoom, just press and hold down the Control key on the keyboard and move your finger over the Magic Mouse for zooming downwards or upwards. Multi-touch can not run on operating systems other than Mac, if you use it on other operating systems it will just be a mouse with two buttons.
Physically, the Magic Mouse has only two buttons. For those who are accustomed to using a mouse with more than two buttons like Mighty Mouse will find such a shortcoming. Other shortcoming is that the Magic Mouse does not support the use of Exposé. Quite disappointing really, because the Exposé feature that is directly integrated on a device like a mouse pointer will further simplify the end user. Apple recommends using Exposé, using the F key on the keyboard.
To run the Magic Mouse, a Bluetooth 2.0 connection system should be used. The distance is approximately 33 feet. The advantage of the Magic Mouse is its ability to reconnect back to the computer after idling, where most of the mouse and keyboard that uses the Bluetooth connection will experience lag about 1 – 3 seconds to be reconnected. This will not happen with the Magic Mouse because it is very quick to connect back to the computer. It shows good precision in use, the good laser sensor tracking power make the cursor moves smoothly and accurately. One more uncomfortable feeling at the time of using the Magic Mouse is the two plastic rails such as mouse feet as mentioned above seem too harsh. It would be better if the Magic Mouse is used on a mouse pad. Finally, the use of minimum operating system that can run the Magic Mouse is a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and the latest one which certainly needs a support of Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 installed software.
Although it is not perfect and there are still deficiencies such as no support for Exposé and minimal buttons, the Apple Magic Mouse remains a successful mix between design and the use of interactive for the user. As usual, the Apple again sets a new standard for computer communications in information technology, The Magic Mouse is a new era and the beginning of a pointing device of the present and future.
