Internet and Global Warming: A recent report from Greenpeace warns data center cloud computing giants including Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo and other mostly use coal as an energy source contributes to global warming. Greenpeace accused the computing giant is not trying to put their data centers where the available alternative energy sources, or make changes to the policy.
Previously Greenpeace criticized in a report due to Facebook to buy electricity from Pacific Power for their data center in Prineville and Oregon, mostly using coal. Greenpeace formed a Facebook group called for Facebook to stop using coal energy.
Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, and Yahoo already have data centers that rely on coal and they will rebuild a new data center is also dependent on coal. Greenpeace states that all of these companies should build a data center where they can get electricity from renewable energy sources. This is done by Apple to build data centers in North Carolina who only use coal as much as 60% of electricity needs.
The report is worrying some infrastructure that was built in one region can increase the demand for the dirty coal energy, while Yahoo gets the credit for building a data center in Bufallo, where there are sources of hydroelectric power.
Greenpeace accusations have some truth to this, the technology industry as a whole has not made a total reform that supports the use of renewable energy and reduce reliance on coal. While the company is not enough just to put data centers in the region with renewable energy.
Step well enough done a few companies, like Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo which has data centers located close to sources of renewable energy and coal are used Google offset by purchasing carbon.
